Electric Car uptake from Uber drivers is still not at the levels that people had expected. Electric cars are being driven less than one in 20 miles for every car in Europe, according to the latest figures which have been released around the world. The uptake among drivers has not been worthwhile and the governments have not been helping or aiding them at all.

Uber has to drastically increase the uptake of these cars for their drivers otherwise they will not be able to hit their environmental targets.

Uber had pledged last year that up to 50% of miles that would be driving in seven European capitals by the end of 2025 would be in battery-electric cars. The vehicles produce zero exhaust emissions, helping to address the impacts on health and the climate caused by the prevalence of urban transport.

The differences between the European capitals can now be seen in the table below. There are quite significant and stark differences.

Saul Lopez, electric fleets programme manager at T&E, said:

“Uber should be doing more but so should governments. In Amsterdam and London, it’s cleaning up its fleet faster because the authorities have set up electrification mandates and effective ultra-low emissions zones.”

It remains to be seen if there will be a bigger push by Uber to get their drivers into electric vehicles, therefore, increasing the uptake. If they can do this then they will go some way to coming through on their pledge.
